Trash Walks
Trash Walks rethinks the role of trash in public realm on the example of a world metropolis like New York. In this city meet all nationalities and different approaches to trash like mass discarding garbage and objects by big buildings, business and residential, scavengers, as well as Sanitation Department taking care of NYC trash. This video is a series of video-recorded performative actions, showcasing trash in NYC public spaces: how it looks like, how it is dealt with and what possible reactions it can provoke (scavenging, collection, art performances, etc.). Therefore first shootings was done in the Fall 2018 in Lower Manhattan and it will be continue in Rockaway, Flushing and Jackson Heights. The video investigates boundaries of art and space. While often ignored, trash piles can be sometimes sculptural and “decorative”, a sort of temporary art installations in public realm executed by supers of the buildings putting out these enormous trash piles in the city streets. My video contributes to the ongoing discussion about the trash, what to do with it, and more broadly about the sustainability and human made climate change.
